BIOGRAPHY
In 1989, Robert Baumanns started making a living as a DJ. One year later, he began to study law at the University of Cologne. When he left university in 1995, he started writing for music magazines and eventually became tour manager for the French multimedia project “Die Form”.
First encounter with Karl Bartos in 1997, when Baumanns challenged Bartos to comment on the historical importance of the German classical composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and his work. Since then, Baumanns has published highly acclaimed articles on Stockhausen, whom he interviews regularly. Stockhausen dedicated the work “Licht-Ruf” to Baumanns.
In 1998 and 1999, Baumanns created films on Karlheinz Stockhausen, Klaus Nomi, and Blondie for the German TV channels WDR and 3sat.
Holger Czukay – founder of the German band CAN – invited Baumanns to be part of his stage show “Magazine” during the CAN tour in 1999.
Also in 1999, Baumanns and Karl Bartos performed a DJ set at the open-air festival for electronic music “Kickzone” in the Cologne swimming stadium – this was to be the launch of Bartos’ live show.
Baumanns became a professional journalist in 2001, having been appointed an editorial position on Cologne’s daily newspaper EXPRESS. His writing focuses on politics and culture.
In 2003 he toured Japan and Russia with Holger Czukay, and in 2004 he played with Karl Bartos in Bogotá, Columbia.
First live audio-visual performances with AudioVision, on their German tour in 2005, as well as DJ gigs with Karl Bartos in Spain and Italy.
As part of the AudioVision performance, Robert Baumanns sets up his mobile TV studio – the so-called Bild Regie – on the right side of the stage. He operates real-time image processing and mixing equipment. Members of the audience can become involved in the creative process via interaction with a triptych of large screens. The result is that films, video loops and animated pictograms blend and morph, surrealistically mirroring the flow of information within our media.
